I love setting it out and seeing what amazing new insects are waiting for me in the morning. This year I will be exhibiting from my own studio in Drumoak, please pop by for a cuppa, it would be lovely to see you. It's been a tough year as I damaged my hand in an accident back in March. It's time to get back in the studio and get cracking on some new pieces! 2018 was a fantastic year! I was so honoured and excited to be invited to one of the Royal Garden Party events at Buckingham Palace in recognition of my work for the Royal Society of Miniature Painters Sculptors and Gravers. Five members of the committee went along and we had a wonderful time with afternoon tea in the gardens and speeches from the Royals!
'Did you see that?' Look out for my owls - they have been used for an advert in 'artmag' and will be at the Milton Art Gallery from 31st Aug. Sold at Aboyne was my piece 'Wandering through the Willow' (long-tailed tits) this was featured in the summer issue of Artists and Illustrators magazine for top tips on sketching.
Well 2018 started with a bang! My work is currently on show with the Miniature Art Society of Florida, in Clearwater USA, you can visit the site here: www.miniature-art.com and I was thrilled to win a prize for the second year running! I was awarded second prize for opaque watercolour for my piece 'The Beautiful Blue'.
Having moved house late last year I now have a garden! I have five robins which have inspired this latest piece.
The painting below is a commission I have produced for the Balmoral Estate as a limited edition Christmas card. Check out Balmoralcastle.com for further information if you would like to purchase a card. The original has already gone to a good home!
A couple of earlier development steps. For reference, the screen colours are darker than the original watercolour.
Wow! Amazing news from London. Delighted to find out that I have been awarded the President's Special Commendation Award at the RMS for 'Love Blossoms' the little wren piece you can see in development below and final piece on my miniatures page. I had a wonderful day at the Mall Galleries where I was presented with my award by Dame Patricia Routledge DBE.
This one follows a looser style to give it more movement, I call it 'The Chase'. It is drawn like the others on Fabriano Hot Press paper, which has a lovely smooth finish for working in tight detail. It isn't as grey as the picture here - if you want to see it in all it's glory you'll have to come and see it at ArtAboyne!
In February I visited South Africa where I attended the WFM (World Federation of Miniaturists Exhibition). This was held in conjunction with MASSA (Miniature Art Society of South Africa). It was lovely to meet so many people and put faces to names. I was so excited to see that my two pieces had been selected by the jury and that I was representing Scotland. The world exhibition only happens every 4 years and brings together all the different countries' leading societies. I also went on safari for a week so I have great inspiration for the coming compositions...watch this space!
This piece is inspired by a walk along the river Dee from Peterculter Heritage Church. Along the old railway line to the river is a sign in the wall to Lover's Walk. I decided to use this image as a background drop for a composition with a summer theme. I used the different plants and butterflies that I regularly see on my walks around the railway line and river. For this latest summer painting I also used swallows for a real summer feeling as I always think summer has come once you see these fabulous birds. These I photographed locally and at Montrose Basin. This piece will be at Aboyne this year.
